Late Fall Musky Hunt

Late Fall Musky Hunt

Late Fall Musky Hunt

Chris Huskilson

Chris Huskilson

Alright, there’s good news and bad news. I’ll give you the bad news first. The open water musky season is in its final stage. The good news is that you have an epic few weeks left to get it done, provided you are fishing in lakes and rivers in and around say, southern Ontario and other near north spots free of ice.

Chris Huskilson

Chris Huskilson

A lot of anglers have thrown in the towel by now and I ask why? This has been an unseasonably warm fall and looks to remain that way. If your favorite lakes start to freeze up, find some faster flowing rivers that will ultimately stay unfrozen much longer. A good example of this would be the Trent Severn waterway which has open dams creating current in river sections that bottle-neck

Chris Huskilson

Chris Huskilson

between lakes. This current will be your friend in many ways, one of which is open water right into mid-December. Of course, the Great Lakes are a good option as they do not tend to freeze up, so launch your boat into the famous Lake St.Clair and get after it.

Let’s take look at the where, why’s and how’s when searching out productive areas for musky and how to get them to attack. Both Aaron Jolicoeur and Chris Huskilson lean on flowing tributaries in the Kawartha region of Ontario when on the hunt for hungry late fall musky and they are definitely dialed into what makes these toothy predators tic. Aaron explains “Don’t abandon aquatic vegetation/weeds that are brown and appear to be dead or dying as these weeds will continue to hold both suckers and bullheads”. You see, suckers and bullheads can thrive in environments low in oxygen and both species are fatty, delicious meal choices for musky.

Now, both Chris and Aaron favor a couple of lures and color choices to mimic these forage types, the first being a 10”-12” plastic tube mostly of the

Beaver's Baits XL Beaver

Beaver’s Baits XL Beaver

unweighted variety, along with jerk and glide type baits. Also, Chris has recently added a new tool to his box, the “Baby beaver” and “Baby Beaver XL” by Beaver’s Baits. These baits are a blend of rubber and hair that provides a very unique, subtle swimming action during the retrieve which can trigger the most negative fish. Color wise, to mimic suckers and bullhead, a dark brown gets the job done.

Another high percentage spot will be on breaklines which create current seams into slack water which are ambush points. Chris Huskilson explains “

Aaron Jolicoeur

Aaron Jolicoeur

I’ll” follow the breakline or contour line in the current with the trolling motor at 30% while casting ahead of the boat, then, I’ll retrieve the tube, “Baby

Chris Huskilson

Chris Huskilson

Beaver” or a Manta on a slack line, with a twitch-pause cadence. I make sure to keep an eye on the GPS unit to better pinpoint the high percentage areas that hold baitfish and ultimately, opportunistic musky. I’ll follow these contour lines into current breaks and slack water, then I’ll fan cast that area before I move on”.

Other meals choices in the Kawarthas also include walleye and their cousins, yellow and jumbo perch. Musky InnovationsTitan Tubes” have some great color choices such as “Walleye and two variations of “Perch”, one which has an orange belly and deeper contrast and the other being more muted and subtle in appearance. Now, rivers at this time of the year can be murky and stained which alters color choice. Aaron explains “In clear water I lean towards more natural colors like walleye, green pumpkin and sucker. When the waters become stained I will throw bright colored tubes in orange, chartreuse or even a combination of the two”. Musky Innovations also offers a couple matches for this situation such as “Sherbert” (orange/chartreuse) and “Cremesicle” (orange/white-speckled back).

Musky Innovations 12 inch Titan Tube Cisco

Musky Innovations 12 inch Titan Tube Cisco

Beyond color choice, proper presentation is the key when fishing for musky. The proper use of “triggers” during the late fall period (and any time of year) is so important when you’re trying to turn the heads of these apex predators.

As water temperatures drop into the low 40’s the overall speed at which you work a bait changes from a

Aaron Jolicoeur

Aaron Jolicoeur

faster twitch-twitch pause to a varied twitch-pause jerkbait style retrieve. The twitch will lift the bait and  make it dart to the side then spiral down on the pause. The most important factor here when applying this type of trigger into a retrieve is the anglers ability to throw slack in line during twitches and pauses. Snapping/twitching on slack line, rather than pulling the bait on a taught line sends it into an erratic sideways darting motion, at which point, again with slack line on the pause, the bait will descend without being pulled into an arching motion towards the boat. These triggers in this presentation are natural representations of injured or dying forage, which top predators such as musky zero in on as an easy meal in the frigid waters of late fall.

Both Aaron and Chris subscribe to this theory and presentation choice. Aaron explains “Tubes can be very unpredictable and erratic which lends itself to this time of year. Experimenting by varying the cadence can help to better predict patterns”. What this means is Aaron will change the timing or length of pauses to efficiently figure out the feeding response of albeit negative, neutral or downright aggressive fish. If tubes, which are a combination of vertical and horizontal presentations aren’t getting a positive response, the full on horizontal presentation of a jerkbait could very well

River Run Tackles Original Manta

River Run Tackles Original Manta

be the next logical choice. The ability to suspend a jerkbait or glide bait in the strikezone for much longer periods of time in cold water can produce bites from finicky, negatively responding musky. One of the best glide baits out there for this application is the legendary “Manta” by RiverRun Tackle. The same cadence rules apply to this bait, just experiment until you find the magic combination of color and speed along with erratic vs steady action, depth and location.

Other ways to further predict the response you may get from these often misunderstood fish could include barometer and moon phases. Some anglers don’t pay attention to either one and some keep both factors in mind. A falling barometer can get all the baitfish in the system a bit more active meaning it is possible that a faster cadence and a more erratic, aggressive retrieve might be the deal, while the opposite may be true on a high pressure raising barometer. Moon phases can also have something to do with activity levels as well as a full moon period, for example, can coincide with the highest activity levels on the calendar. Keep in mind, musky might not have read the book on this so again, you need to read the waters you’re on in conjunction with the prevailing conditions and experiment with the cadence until you can pattern the fish.

Muskie Innovations Bulldawg

Muskie Innovations Bulldawg

Expanding on throwing plastics for late fall musky a bit, local Kawartha and Lake St. Clair hot stick and owner of Figure Ate Guide Service  Sam Ecker can shed more light: “I throw Musky InnovationsBulldawgs” all year, but when the

Muskie Innoavtions Double Dawg

Muskie Innovations Double Dawg

water temps drop and/or there is high current I’ll cast the magnum version of the “Bulldawg”. Late fall it is magnums all the way in the Kawarthas. “Bulldawgs” can be fished much the same way as a tube. Lift-drop, twitch-pause is the order of the day. When I fish Lake St. Clair I’ll turn my attention to Musky Innovations “Shallow Invaders” in colors that mimic shad as this is the main forage base on this body of water”.

Sam Ecker

Sam Ecker- Figure Ate Guide Service

Now what about boat side maneuvers in all of this? Good question. This is the final “trigger” that will turn a follow into a bite. Weather it is “Titan Tubes”, “Bulldawgs”, “Shallow Invaders, “Manta” jerkbaits or “Baby Beavers”, you must be focused on boat side maneuvers. Twitch-pauses are a trigger, but there are a couple more very important triggers beyond that. Speeding up during the last 25% of the retrieve can trigger a bite as well. But

Musky Innovations Dyin Dawg

Musky Innovations Dyin Dawg

when a musky is non-committal to this, a proper figure 8 which involves slowing down and raising the bait into a wide turn, then speeding up and plunging the bait on the straight away. You need to make them chase the bait and force

Shallow Invader

Musky Innovations Shallow Invader

them into a kneejerk reaction and thus making a decision, you know?  This is the final trigger so if you get bit make sure your hooks are sharp, and you are focused and ready to set the hook into what could be the biggest fish of the season.

Sam Ecker

Sam Ecker- Figure Ate Guide Service

There is one more thing that can enhance the equation and that is the use of scent. Applying Liquid Mayhem baitfish scent is highly recommended as this creates a scent trail which adds to the realism of any lure as Liquid Mayhem is made with real baitfish. This will not only peak curiosity, but this might give you the extra second you need to set the hooks as the fish will hold on longer due to the yummy taste factor.

I’ll add this, the tackle is of utmost importance as musky are very powerful so make sure you can handle this aspect of the game. 8’6”-9’ XX heavy rods, coupled with wide arbor high quality reels spooled with 80lb braid paired with 100-150lb fluorocarbon leaders with high quality snaps are an absolute must.

Musky Innovations Bulldawg

Musky Innovations Bulldawg

This is it, time is running out but this is the time when the biggest, meanest, hungriest toothy critters are on the prowl and are putting on the feedbag so gear up and get after them. This is the time when  the hunters become the hunted so let the fall Musky hunt continue.

See you out there.

Performance:

The boat that we used during this review was well equipped with a brand new 2016 Evinrude 250 HO G2. We were on plane with no effort at all and quickly lost sight of the speedometer which maxed out at 65 MPH!!! The ride at this speed, and all on plane speeds, was absolutely impeccable! Smooth, stable, quiet and very fast! This boat is an absolute wave crusher!! Rides very well in 3-4’ waves. A must have for big water applications.

Features/Design:

As stated above this boat is loaded with Standard and Optional Features to suit any and all needs. A few that really stood out are as follows.

Lockable Bow Rod Storage – up to 8′

Starboard Rod Storage – up to 8′

AlumaTrac System

MORE AND BIGGER RIBS

The Alumacraft all-welded ribs can really take a pounding. They are heavier, wider and stronger than the competition making the entire boat tougher and more rigid. Ribs are positioned on narrow 12″ centers. This results in more ribs making the hull stronger the entire length of the boat!

LARGER AIRCRAFT-GRADE RIVETS

Inherent strength is greater with larger rivets and we can see this with the Alumacraft boats. Larger rivets mean stronger rivets. Stronger rivets mean fewer rivets are needed. Fewer rivets mean fewer holes need to be drilled, significantly reducing the chance of ever popping a rivet. This boat is bone dry and tough as nails!

ONE-PIECE HULL

Alumacraft uses a single piece of aluminum that is cut and shaped to form the hull of this boat. Other manufacturers rivet, or weld, two separate pieces together. The Alumacraft one-piece design assures there are no seams on the boat’s bottom, providing the greatest possible inherent strength and no heaving.

HEAVIER GAUGE ALUMINIUM

All Alumacraft boats are made with heavy-gauge, top-quality, 5052 marine-grade aluminum. They last a very long time.

Application:

This really is a boat that wears many hats. While it is absolutely dialed in for the professional/recreational angler it doubles very nicely as a boat that can be utilized for a family to enjoy. A very spacious comfortable ride with seating for 4 in the cockpit area. And plenty of power and performance to pull a skier or wakeboarder.

Introduction:

When I am guiding for Northern Pike in North Western Ontario or back in my home waters in southern Ontario chasing Muskies I have one rule, there is no way I’m leaving my cabin or house without a Musky Innovations Shallow Invader and big brother the 13 inch Magnum Shallow Invader in my arsenal. The hard plastic body and soft plastic tail design paired with the UV Reflex creates a realistic look and swimming action that is unmatched. I have been chasing Essox for many years and have yet to come across a bait that out fishes the Shallow Invader. Not only do they catch fish after fish but the quality is fantastic. The best part is once the tail has been completely destroyed and is past repairing, Musky innovations sales replacement tails. Trolling or casting the Shallow Invader produced results in all conditions. With an assortment of colors available including custom colors, UV colors and regular colors there shortage of finding a color or colors that will be superior on the system you are fishing. Truly a must have lure in your tackle box.

Performance:

The performance of the Musky Innovations Shallow Invader is unmatched. With its low profile body and swim action, these baits tend to drawn in more fish than any other bait I have used. The jerk pause or straight retrieve when casting allows the bait to swim naturally and not tangle which results in more well-presented and naturally presented casts over fowl ups. Trolling while long lining 60-70 ft of line at 2-3 MPH or 10-15ft of line out in the prop wash behind the boat at 4-6 MPH, I have never experienced any blow outs. The balance of the bait is perfect. After multiple fish the bait keeps the original swim action with no altercations to the bill, tail, body or through wire eyelets.

Features/Design:

Key features of the Muskie Innovations Shallow Invader are its performance in the water and its ability to have tail repairers multiple times and still keep its original action. This is crucial when on the water because you may have only a few of the key patterns that seem to draw the big girls to the boat that with you. There are tons of baits that once they have cracked etc.. Loose their ability to perform the same action as previous to their destruction. The through wire features gives you durability and confidence that by eliminating screw eyes nothing can get loose resulting in loss of fish. The UV design which Musky Innovations has also carried through most of their line of lures, allows the bait to be presented more naturally in the water. We cannot see UV light but fish can. Penetrating the water bait fish naturally reflects UV light and when added to a bait the lures attracts more fish to commit rather than just follow.

Application:

I use Shallow Invaders from season open to season close. Because these baits can be casted or trolled you can speed or slow your retrieve depending on the energy level of the game fish and while “matching the hatch”. Early season to mid-season I tend to have a faster retrieve (less pauses faster figure eights) then later in the season where my retrieve slows down adding more pauses when casting the Shallow Invader results in more fish netted. When trolling a weed edge in slow water (6-12ft) I find these baits are most effective when speed trolling 4-6 MPH with 10-15 FT of line out. When fishing a deep rock pile or point (12-30ft) I find these baits do best when long lining trolling.

Conclusion:

All Musky Innovations baits are amazing! Definitely a go to bait when targeting Northern Pike in North Western Ontario Also a deadly bait when targeting Muskie from early season into late. The Mag and regular Shallow Invader has a multi-use feature, by this I mean it can be casted or trolled. One of the best features of this bait is the swimming action. When casting it can be straight retrieved or used as a jerk bait. Because of the profile/weight ratio the bait will stay up right when paused in the water column allowing a hang time for a Essox predator to take advantage of the moment. Trolling this bait can be right in the prop wash or long lined with no blow outs. The UV Reflex colors allow fish to see this bait naturally as bait fish reflect UV light which fish can see. I would recommend this bait to all anglers starting out or who have not yet tried Shallow Invaders.

Product Review: Lake Fork Tackle Premium Series 1.5 Finesse Square Bill

Date: 10/28/15
Product type: Crankbait (Square bill)

There’s one type of bait every Bass angler has in their box, crankbaits, and I’m no different. If I’ve learned something about these baits is that it is good to have a wide selection to choose from. Square bill crankbaits are a very important variation that should be considered and I found a neat little option, the Premium Series 1.5 finesse

LFT Premium Series 1.5 finesse Square Bill

LFT Premium Series 1.5 finesse Square Bill

Square Bill from my friends at Lake Fork Trophy Lures. At times, it was almost unfair to the Bass and the other anglers in the boat when I worked these baits.

“Premium Series” definitely defines these high end, high quality crankbaits. Lake Fork Trophy Lures took craftsmanship to the max while keeping in mind that durable hardware and a variety of color choices would make this an effective, sought after bait choice. Airbrushed finishes along with realistic eyes (very important) makes for a very high level of detail and realism that mimics a wide variety of forage found everywhere from Texas to northern Ontario

How do these baits perform? Exceptionally. When using the proper rod, reel, line combination, the 1.5 Finesse Square Bill shines. Because of its smaller size, a 7’ medium/light-medium power, medium speed spinning rod paired with a 5.4-1 speed reel spooled with 8-10lb fluorocarbon line is ideal. If a baitcaster is your thing, then I would stick with a medium/light power with the same specs as mentioned previously. These set-ups will allow for maximum castability and ease of use for even the most novice of angler. The action is very natural and subtle which makes for an easy meal for the laziest, most neutral Bass. It has a tight wobble that doesn’t diminish from very slow, to super-fast retrieves. I’ve bounced these baits through rocks, bumped them into stumps and through vegetation and caught limits of big smallmouth and largemouth with zero damage to the bill, body or hooks. Very impressive for a smaller version of a timely classic such as a power style crankbait.

The Premium Series by Lake Fork Trophy Lures has just been introduced within the last year or so I believe so as far as the 1.5 Finesse Square Bill is concerned, there is only one size to choose from at this point. I’m sure that in the future more sizes of crankbaits will be introduced but, this particular size of bait is very useful. As previously mentioned, the realism and action combined with the 1.5 Finesse Square Bill is something different to add, and ultimately round out an angler’s crankbait selection. Its weight and size are perfect for finesse cranking.

Being a square bill style crankbait, there are a wide range of applications for this little gem. Scraping substrate such as rocks, sand or a combination of the two is a deadly presentation for triggering aggressive to neutral Bass. For example, crawling/bouncing the 1.5 Finesse Craw, along a rocky bottom for smallmouth can be the order of the day. Smallmouth will favor small crawfish as they are easy to digest and are an absolute delicacy for them. Also, so are small bluegill, herring, bream or shad (depending on your location). I fish these baits in areas that hold schools of bluegill and other sunfish along weedlines and in cover such as fallen timber. Again, the square bill and its floating properties allow the bait to bounce off of cover, free of snags thus triggering bites from ambushing Bass.
